Shalom friends,

Every week, a portion of the Torah called Parashat
haShavu’a is publically read in the
synagogue. Throughout the year, the whole five books of the Torah are read.

On the day that follows the Festival of Sukkot
we celebrate the conclusion of the annual cycle of public Torah readings, and the beginning of a new
cycle. This celebration is called (Simxat
Torah, Rejoicing of the Torah) and it is characterized by spirited singing and dancing in the synagogue - both at the evening and the morning services. At this time the last portion of the Torah is read.
Since we never finish reading the Torah, we also read on that occasion the
beginning of the book of Genesis .

During Simxat Torah, all the Torah scrolls are taken out from the ark ( , ‘aron
hakodesh) and are carried seven times in a parade around the synagogue, while everyone dances and sings with the scrolls. The parade is known as "hakafot"
. The custom of going around the synagogue symbolizes the reestablishment
of our covenant with the Torah as a groom rejoices with his bride, for the Torah is betrothed to Israel as a wife is to her husband.

In the Diaspora, the celebration lasts for two days. In modern Israel it is customary
to have another set of "hakafot" ( , hakafot shniyot) on the night following
Simxat Torah. These "hakafot" take place outdoors and are often accompanied by music bands and public figures.

A year ago we began writing and delivering the HebrewOnline newsletters featuring subjects that interest Hebrew-language lovers all around the world. We tried to give you the flavor of the holidays and seasons in Israel, the taste of the Israeli food and some insights into the Israeli daily life. We spiced it up with Hebrew words, songs and idioms. We are happy to celebrate the first birthday of this newsletter on Simxat Torah and to begin a new year of newsletters. We thank you for your lovely and encouraging feedbacks and would like to hear from you even more in the coming year.

Mo’adim leSimxa,
Happy Feast,

The Hebrew Online Team.
