On the 30th day of Shvat (ל' שְׁבָט) which falls this year on February 24th, we celebrate the Family Day (יוֹם הַמִּשְׁפָּחָה, yom hamishpaxa). Once it was called Mother's day (יוֹם הָאֵם, yom ha'em) and emphasized the traditional roles of a mother such as caring for the children and the house. As traditional family roles have been changing, Mother's Day became Family Day which emphasizes positive family relationships such as love and mutual support. Now, in modern times, it also provides us with the opportunity to discuss less-traditional families such as single-parent and divorced families.

The date of Yom Hamishpaxa couldn't be more appropriate as it was set to Henrietta Szold's (1860-1945) birthday. Although Henrietta Szold had no biological children of her own, she was the mother of many young children who came to the Land of Israel as part of the Youth Aliyah (עֲלִיַּת הַנֹּעַר), an organization that rescued some 22,000 Jewish children from Nazi Europe. She fought for the Jewish children's right to
|
make Aliya to Erets Israel (אֶרֶץ יִשְׂרָאֵל) and to have the warmth of the family they missed.
In her youth, she was the first woman permitted to study Jewish texts at the then male-only Jewish Theological Seminary. In 1898, the Federation of American Zionists elected Szold as the only female member of its executive committee, and in 1912 she founded Hadassah (הֲדַסָּה), a women's organization which recruited American Jewish women to upgrade health care in Erets Israel.
