Shalom friends,
What is more important than friendship? We all agree that our friends are a significant part of our life and we feel lucky if we find partners that are also our friends. Friendships take different aspects in different cultures. When two Israelis meet anywhere in the world, we always try to find common friends - give us a few minutes, and we succeed. We go through hometown, military service, school, relatives, jobs... and bingo - we find one or more mutual friend.
In our developing virtual world, friendships have acquired a modern twist. We can see it in the various friendships that evolve around the internet. Here, in HebrewOnline, we enjoy being a part of the virtual friendships that develop in our classes, among students and teachers. Our common love to the Hebrew language brings us together and we often cross the virtual lines and become friends in "real life". You are welcome to read about some of these stories by clicking here.
The importance of friendships in the Israeli culture reveals itself in the many synonyms we have for the word "friend". We also have names of people and places that mean friend or friendship. And of-course, there are songs devoted to this topic as well. We’ll meet some of them in this friendly newsletter.
