Shalom friends,

This time of the year is characterized by giving
and receiving gifts. A gift ( , matana) is something
that is given to someone free of charge, with no requirement for anything in return. Giving a gift may symbolize affection and thankfulness. It is often given for some kind of event, such as holiday, birthday, or wedding.
Gift sharing has practical as well as emotional meaning. It is reciprocal, and therefore, it is important to know how to give and how to receive a present, respecting the practical as well as the emotional thought given into it.
It is interesting to note that the root of the word is (to give), and hence the
meaning of the well-known Hebrew names (Yonatan, Jonathan), and
(Netan'el, Nathanael) is "G-d gave" or "G-d's gift."
In this issue, we'll learn about different Hebrew words for gift, the Hebrew conjugation of the verb "to give", related Hebrew names, and much more.

Bi'yedidut,
With friendship,

The Hebrew Online Team.

Weekly Hebrew Verse

Transcription: "sone matanot yixye"
Translation: "he that hateth gifts shall live" (Proverbs 15: 27)
Meaning: King Solomon calls to hate presents. The bible commentators claim that presents may cause greediness, hypocrisy, and preferring the gift giver and therefore it is recommended to hate them. The verse may also suggest to be happy with what one has, and to trust in G-d's spiritual gifts rather than expecting gifts from human beings.

" Thank you for your email about 'Hanucha' I think it is a wonderful event to celebrate. I know is not mentioned in the Tanach - as the writing of that was completed before the Maccabees - but it is mentioned in what is known as the New Covenant or Testament - in the book called John- John was the Jewish fisherman from Galilee who wrote the book . In chapter 10 verse 22 he writes 'Then came the feast of Dedication at Jerusalem . It was winter and Jesus was in the temple area walking in Solomons colonnade . Many believe that Jesus is the promised Messiah
May you all have a blessed Hanucha celebration best wishes "

" Hi,
Thank you for this detailed history lesson that is of tremendous importance to all Jews, but even more so for me and my family. I was told by the Rabbi that officiated at my wedding that my father's maternal family left Judea either with Alexander or followed him and settled in Ioannina, Greece, in the Epirus Mountains.(Macedonia) Those very few that survived WWII, now live in Athens, Salonika and Israel.
Hoping for a Pandemic of Peace. Shalom "
