Shalom,
Do you like birthdays? Do you like New Year celebrations? Do you like trees? If we put it all together we get Tu Bi'Shvat - the New Year and the official birthday of the trees!
| "Tu" |
stands for the number 15 and "Shvat" is the name of the month in the Jewish |
Calendar. By this time, most of the rain had fallen and the fruits have become ripe. It's the perfect time to plant trees, and this is how we celebrate Tu Bi'Shvat in Israel – by planting trees.
This year, however, is a bit different due to the fact that it is a Sabbatical Year for the land
in which the land is left to lay fallow and all agricultural activity including |
planting is forbidden by Torah law. Therefore, we postpone the planting until next year.
(If you are interested in planting a tree in Israel, you may follow this link. It will be planted, however, after the Sabbatical year).
In the Diaspora, Jewish people celebrate Tu Bi'Shvat by eating dried fruits of the trees that grow in Israel such as almonds, dates, figs, raisins, and carob.

Happy Tu Bi'Shvat!
