HebrewOnline newsletter Issue #34 March 2008 eTeacher Group
Shalom friends,

Every culture and religion has a special way of celebrating the uniting of two people as husband and wife. The Jewish tradition of marriage is full of meaningful rituals, symbolizing the beauty of the relationship as well as the couple’s obligations to each other and to the Jewish people. There are many different customs, but there are some that take place in every Jewish wedding.

During the ceremony the couple, joined by their parents, stands under a "xupa" Xupa ,
which is an open canopy that symbolizes their home and resembles the tent of Abraham
and Sarah. During the Betrothal Betrothal , the couple drinks wine which is a symbol of
joy and sanctification of a man and woman to each other. The wedding becomes official when the groom gives the bride a plain gold ring in hope that their marriage would be of
plain beauty. Afterwards, the wedding contract wedding contract is read and seven blessings are
proclaimed. The blessings are general and remind the couple that they are not alone when they get married – they are part of the people of Israel from the day of the Creation. The ceremony concludes with a shattering of a glass placed on the floor, to remind us of the destruction of the temple in Jerusalem even at the most joyful moments of our life. This act ties another link between the couple and the spiritual and national destiny of the Jewish people.
