Shalom friends,
| On the tenth day of the Hebrew month of Tishrey ( |
 |
) Jewish people experience the |
| holiest day of the year - Yom Kippur ( |
 |
, Day of Atonement). |
On this day, G-d seals our fate for the coming year. We spend the entire day fasting and praying for G-d's forgiveness and a good year.
| The Torah calls the day Yom HaKippurim ( |
 |
) and commands not to work |
on that day, and to afflict our souls.
 |
|
| "In the seventh month, on the tenth day of the month, ye shall afflict your souls, and shall do no manner of work, the home-born, or the stranger that sojourneth among you. For on this day shall atonement be made for you, to cleanse you; from all your sins shall ye be clean before the LORD." (Leviticus 16:29-30) |
|
In order for us to "afflict our souls" we abstain from food and drink, do not wash or anoint our bodies, do not wear leather shoes, and abstain from marital relations.
It is important to note that this day is devoted to atone for the sins between a person and G-d. Therefore, it is important to devote the time before Yom Kippur to ask forgiveness for broken promises between people, as G-d cannot forgive these kinds of broken promises.
In Israel, all businesses are closed on Yom Kippur: There are no radio or television broadcasts, no public transportation, and no open businesses. It is considered bad form to eat in public or drive a motor vehicle. Youngsters, however,
| take advantage of the empty streets to ride their bicycles ( |
 |
, ofanayim). |
|

|
The days of repentance begin by inscribing our fate in Rosh Hashana and finish in Yom
| Kippur, when the final ( |
 |
, gmar) "sealing" ( |
 |
, xatima) takes place. |
Therefore we bless each other in the time between Rosh Hashana and Yom Hakippurim in the following way:

Gmar Xatima Tova
Literal meaning: A good final sealing
Idiomatical translation: May you be inscribed (in the book of life) for Good!

I am in my 2nd class with Hebrewonline. I have been classmates with a woman from New York for both sessions. I am also a New Yorker, but now live in Florida. Last week my husband and I went to NY for a week. One of the first things I did was let Lauri know I was coming and make arrangements to visit her.
We had never seen each other before, but recognized each other's voices immediately! It was great fun. We would never have met if it weren't for Hebrewonline.
We both have children living in Israel and had a lot to talk about
