Le 15 du mois de Shvat, (le 9 février 2009), nous célébrons la fête de Tu BiShvat (ט"ו בִּשְׁבָט) ,la Nouvelle Année des arbres et des fruits. Tu Bisvat a été mentionné la première fois dans le Mishna (מִשְׁנָה) comme étant une des quatre « Nouvelles Années » du calendrier juif. Selon la loi juive, il est défendu de manger les fruits des arbres âgés de trois ans et moins. Tu Bisvat est la date de calcul pour l’âge des arbres. Malgré le fait que Tu Bishvat soit pertinent seulement à la terre d’Israël, les Juifs de la Diaspora avaient l’habitude de célébrer cette fête en mangeant des fruits secs provenant d’Israë. Et, à certains endroits, en ayant un Tu Bisvat Seder spécial où on bénissait les fruits et où on lisait des versets de la bible qui traitaient de fruits.
La tradition moderne, en ce qui concerne le Tu Bisvat, a son origine en 1890. Le professeur et auteur Rabin Zeev Yavetz (זְאֵב יַעְבֵץ). est sorti un jour, avec ses étudiants, planter des arbres dans la colonie agricole de Zichron Yaakov. Son idée a été adoptée par d’autres écoles, et en 1908, le Syndicats des Professeur Juifs (הִסְתַּדְּרוּת הַמּוֹרִים) et plus tard, la Fondation nationale Juive (קֶרֶן קַיֶּמֶת לְיִשְׂרָאֵל) , keren Hakayement le’Israel, en ont fait le jour officiel de la « plantation d’arbres » en Israël.
